Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is the fourth Roberts generation to reside in Atlanta starting with her great-grandfather who was a farmer John Pendleton Roberts. She inherited her father's interest in the theatre at a young age. In 1952, while an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. When he joined in 1953 the Air Force, he appeared alongside Betty Lou Bredemus in Biloxi. They got married in 1955. Their first baby son Eric Anthony, was born in the year 1956. Walter was enrolled in Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. In the year 1957, they left the airforce and Walter began his studies at Tulane. Walter began his work at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter and Betty Lou financed their own production of the local Sunday morning show for children, Bum Bum and His Buddies. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou established their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. The workshop lasted 6 years. They had two more children. Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also called Lisa) and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also know by the same name Julie).
