
Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a mother of both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. She recalled that growing up she was rejected by her peers due to the shade of her skin. Their parents were struggling financiallyand were always shifting, having to leave their lives sixteen different times to pursue their father's work. Russell expressed her feelings about how despite all the hardships, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined as a child. She hoped to be a ballet dancer and then to be an artist. Russell was eighteen when she began her first acting class. She saved money from work to purchase a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work when her money ran out and then resume making auditions again. She continued this routine for four years, until she was given her first TV role.
